Founded in the mid-1850s, the St. John the Baptist parish originally consisted of a small school, rectory, and convent, located in an area of open farmland. Over the years, the subsequent development of Colerain Township brought with it demands for a larger church and expanded school. While the old church held great sentimental value to the parishioners, it became necessary to demolish the historic building in order to make way for the new construction. However, stained glass, millwork, stations of the cross, statues, and the altar were salvaged from the original church to be incorporated into the new expansion as a link to the community's past.
The completed expansion project united the school, rectory, and multi-purpose building into a coherent complex, and great care was taken to make sure that the design of the new church blended with the existing buildings. Along with the new 1,000-seat sanctuary, the first floor of the expansion includes a daily chapel, a large gathering space, two new sacristies, and a bride's room. The lower level contains a new kitchen, cafeteria, and space for six additional classrooms.
