ANNEX ADDTION II ANDREW W. BREIDENBACH ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH CENTER U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY Designed by SFA Architects, The Annex Addition, to the U.S. EPA's existing center in Cincinnati presented a unique challenge. The project sought integration of a new office pavilion into an existing laboratory campus and required substantial security considerations while achieving LEED Gold certification. Environmental sustainability goals such as daylighting, occupant views, lighting systems, HVAC design and eco-conscious materials were central to the design of the building. The facility is as much a reflection and study of research as it is in architectural design. Design efforts put forth on the EPA Annex Addition have created a facility that seamlessly connects new and old while accommodating a multitude of present and future occupancies within the EPA's required framework. It is a living building that is continuously adapting to climate, context and user needs. |
