EMILIO FERNANDEZ , R.A. LEED AP | PRINCIPAL EDUCATION: Architecture | University of Havana, Cuba EXPERIENCE 53 years | 42 years with SFA Architects In 1967, just seven years after he emigrated from Cuba to the United States, Emilio Fernandez founded SFA Architects. In addition to having to learn the English language, Emilio had to obtain his architectural license by taking a four day certification test. Despite other participants' low passing rate, Emilio passed the first time. Independent and wanting full control over his projects, he ventured out on his own, against the advice of his employers at the time. They warned him of the low success rate of start-up architectural practices and the competitive nature of the profession. While the firm he was with had more than 50 staff members at that time, Emilio felt compelled to take the leap in order to ensure a better future for his family. Forty-two years later, with his previous employer no longer in business, the firm he founded continues to succeed and grow.
